Sam Brice is a Baltimore-based portrait artist working almost exclusively in chalk and soft pastel. His subjects range from cultural icons — Tupac, Biggie, Marvin Gaye, Dr. King — to the everyday moments most artists overlook: children at marbles, a toddler's first step, two friends folded in prayer.
Each portrait is built up by hand, one fine layer of pastel at a time, with the patience of a craftsman and the eye of a storyteller. The work is grounded in Black American life and culture, and in a deep love for the people of Baltimore — its Ravens, its musicians, its neighborhoods.
